Questions About 3-Day Safari From Zanzibar
A 3-day safari from Zanzibar is generally the minimum recommended duration to fully enjoy the experience. Most itineraries include a flight from Zanzibar to the park on the first day, two nights in the park, and a return flight on the third day. This schedule allows for at least four game drives, or a mix of game drives and a boat safari when visiting Nyerere National Park.
With three to four well-timed game drives—typically in the early morning and late afternoon, when wildlife is most active—you’ll greatly improve your chances of spotting a wide variety of animals and making the most of your safari adventure.
Yes, a 3-day safari from Zanzibar does involve a flight to the mainland, as Zanzibar itself doesn’t offer a true safari experience. While the island has a few wildlife parks, they are more similar to zoos than open savannahs.
The closest option is Saadani National Park, near Dar es Salaam, which can be reached by a short flight or by boat followed by a drive. Other popular safari destinations, such as Nyerere or Mikumi National Parks, typically require a direct flight from Zanzibar.
As a result, most 3-day safaris from Zanzibar are fly-in safaris, where you land at an airstrip inside or near the national park and are then transferred to your lodge or camp for the start of your safari experience.
For a budget-friendly 3-day safari from Zanzibar, a camping safari to Saadani National Park is a good option, with prices typically ranging from $200 to $250 per person per day. This usually includes transfers, park fees, accommodation, meals, some drinks, a professional guide, and game drives. On camping safaris, guests may be expected to assist with light camp duties.
For a more comfortable or luxury experience, safaris to parks such as Nyerere or Mikumi National Parks generally start at around $400 per person per day, with prices increasing significantly for high-end lodges and tented camps. Safaris to northern Tanzania parks tend to be even more expensive due to longer distances and higher flight costs.
